The Earth is a moving body, constantly vibrating. There is not a single moment of complete stillness. These natural vibrations generate frequencies that escape our direct perception – vibrations arising in the atmosphere and within the Earth itself, signals of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and meteorite impacts.
The human body resonates with such signals. Like the Earth’s low hum, our brains also produce rhythms in a similar range. It can seem as if the world were vibrating at 16 hertz.
The sound installation takes up this phenomenon using two organ pipes. At the threshold of human hearing, a deep tone fills the space – a hum that sinks into the pit of the stomach and feels more physical than auditory. In music theory, the organ tone Subcontra C, at 16 hertz, is also referred to as the „Tone of Humility“.
