Atmosphere ≠ Totality

Diorama

The dioramas show meteorites and volcanic stones that Schulzek bought and collected herself. They are set in stainless steel and acryl glass plates. For Schulzek, meteorites and volcanic rocks represent entropic material that existed before human history and will exist after it. Entropy describes the process that every material in the universe decays. Schulzek believes that human beings cannot resign themselves to crumbling to dust like all the other material in the universe. Instead, human beings want to subordinate material and place themselves above it. The alternative, acknowledging that they are a part of it, is profoundly humbling.
